FEEDING DIRECTIONS:

Place seed in a bird feeder, preferably a platform feeder, or ground feeder. The feeder should be located close to some trees or natural cover. When the birds become accustomed to the feeder as a source of food, maintain bird feed in the feeder at all times. The Cardinal's diet is composed almost entirely of seeds, preferring sunflower and safflower seed, in the fall and winter. Their natural diet consists of seeds in the winter with the addition of fruits and insects in the spring and summer. Chickadees prefer much the same diet and are also primarily platform or ground feeders. These two birds have high energy requirement and cannot survive a period of 24 hours without food. Keep your bird feeder clean to prevent the spread of disease. Continue to feed the birds throughout the year, particularly in the spring when newly hatched birds are beginning to feed.
